This summer I have disappointed my goals of reading. I love getting into new series and finding great books, especially ones that I can share with my students. This summer hasn’t left a lot of time for that.
What I have read:
I had a Rick Riordan kick at the end of the year (since we read The Lightening Thief for a fun unit to end the school year). This kick included:
-The Red Pyramid (first time to read)
-The Throne of Fire (book AFTER Red Pyramid, first time for me to read)
-Percy Jackson and the Olympians books 2-5 (I have read these…well, more than once or twice each!)
-Then I have been itching to re-read the Fablehaven series, which I’ve gotten maybe 40 pgs into…(But it’s great. Like, if you are missing you some Harry Potter, this can almost fill the void in your life.)
I had the chance to sample a few new books:
Write Beside Them (For CTWP, so not necessarily for fun, but still good)
The Help (First time to read, totally recommend it)
I still want to read but haven’t been able to get myself started on for whatever reason:
The Maze Runner
The Lost Hero
And now, I realize, I have TWO WEEKS before I officially go back to the school year. And the best parts of my summers are being able to read new, fun books. And I don’t even know what I am looking for.
So that leads me to the question: Anybody have some good reads recently?
I want to celebrate the end of the summer in a good way. My niche is definitely fantasy and sci-fi, but as shown by my love for The Help, I am capable of falling in love with books other than that genre!
This summer I have been reading the following: The Greater Journey by David McCullough (one of my favorite authors), Amish Peace and Amish Proverbs by Suzanne Woods Fisher.
I wish I had time to read more books!
Hmmm. Fantasy and sci-fi are perhaps my least favorite…so I may not be much help to you! I am reading “Beauty” by Robin McKinley, just finished “Her Good Name” by Josi Kilpack (and I was surprised–I couldn’t put it down!) I too loved “The Help” and my favorite fantasies are Inkheart and the Redwall series… I truly love Shannon Hales’ “Book of 1000 Days” and “Princess Academy” too. And…would you like me to stop now??? 🙂
I don’t really have any suggestions, but I will say that I thought The Maze Runner was a REALLY good book.
Leviathan Wakes is excellent. I’m SUPER picky about books, and my only hesitation is that there is some swearing. Also it is Sci-Fi, but it’s not very sciency which makes it very approachable.
Mortal Coils by Eric Nylund. It is the first in a 5-book series and is fantasy/mythology. Lots of great characters and perspective shifts and clever writing style. I am on the second book now. You will dig it.
Also, if you want to cry (a lot) and see into the mind of an 11-year-old girl with asperger’s syndrome, read Mockingbird.
