May-be a busy month

Yeah, I know. Lots to say, not enough time to type and post. Unless I decide to miss out on sleep. Or maybe a hot shower. And my priorities just don’t roll that way.

Anyways, May is a busy month in our household. The Man Of The Household has his birthday, and one of my brother’s birthdays. In the past, I was wrapping up the end of the school year, which was always…fun?

SAMSUNG(Showing Dad how to party on his special day!)

This year brought on Mother’s day and baby’s first swimming lessons AND first tooth, instead. (And then there’s the fact I take care of one small human, one tall human, 3 small dogs, and four chickens, too.  What? You can do all that and a full time job AND weed your garden every day? Show off.)

So fun times for us. The Little E turned ELEVEN months. (I get to be the Big E. Go ahead and laugh.)

SAMSUNG

Seriously, where has this year gone? I’m pretty sure Evelyn just barely showed up in my life a month or two ago… and now she’s almost walking on her own.

Oh, and NOW she can bite. Baby teeth are like little razors. I think I would be extra grumpy if that sucker was breaking through my skin, too. But since Evelyn’s always pretty grumpy, fights going to sleep, drools, and gnaws on everything, it was still sort of a surprise for that cute tooth to poke up Tuesday.

She also did a GREAT job in the pool. She had no problem going into the pool. She is such a water baby. Which was great when she had 45 minute class four evenings a week for the past two weeks. I think it wore me out more than it did her!

(Mom, this is AWESOME! It’s like my bath, but A WHOLE LOT MORE room to splash!!!)

You know, I had a whole bunch more to talk about, but I just looked at those cute pictures of pool-ready Evelyn and with a big smile on my face, completely lost my train of thought. It was a busy month, but full of good things. So on that bombshell, I think it’s a wrap.

Just look at that cute little smile and think happy thoughts before you go to bed tonight.

Recently, it was my brother Jacob’s birthday, and I made him a special gift: a Link amigurumi figure from “The Legend of Zelda” games that he was a huge fan of growing up. He also loves playing Link on “Smash Brothers” and as soon as I came across this pattern from Tanoshimou and these accessories and great pictures from All About Ami.

Of course, I did make a few changes. The biggest change is that instead of the traditional green getup, I had Link in red, since that’s his favorite color!

I am thrilled with how my little buddy Link turned out:

The awesome part about this pattern is that his head can swivel! It was kind of funky to crochet the ball and joint for his head, but it actually turned out better than I thought it would! 🙂

Once he was done (A LOOOOONG process!) it was time for his shield, sword, and sheath!

2013-05-15 22.24.13  I followed Stephanie’s instructions mostly for the shield. The main difference was that I bought gray yarn JUST for this project, and so I used it for the back of the shield as well instead of blue.

As for the sword and sheath, I had to be a little more creative. I didn’t have any good dowels or materials for the “blade” so I crocheted it. Because it was a little bigger, I had to make the sheath a little bigger, too. I didn’t follow a specific pattern for either- I just eyeballed what seemed to work well in proportion to my Link.

After all that, you put it all together and TA-DA!

Jared had to inform me that I had the sword and sheath going the wrong way on Link (NERD ALERT!) so I had to do some small adjustments for his photo op and packaging to be sent to his new BFF Jacob, but all in all this was such a fun project. I think this makes up for the lack of gifts that I couldn’t send to Jacob when he was off doing missionary work in Fiji for two years. (Have you ever tried shipping anything to Fiji?! It’s ridiculous!)

Oh, and did I mention the hat comes off, too? So awesome. Seriously, get busy and make this for the resident nerds in your life. They’ll love you all the more for it. 😉

The Mister’s birthday was last week, and I had been working on a special project for him based on his recent renewal of love for all things zombies!

Welcome to the house: The Zombiebot (yet another Pinterest goody!)

SAMSUNG

HOW CUTE IS HE?!

This was a really fun project, just using simple spotted beige yarn (I used Vanna’s Choice Oatmeal from Lion Brand) and just some black yarn. It’s ALL single crocheting in the round.

Find some random screws and/or nails, a few springs (or in my case, some wire wound around a small screwdriver will work) and voila- your very own little minion.

I think that the hardest part was the assembly and stitching on the scars- mainly because I was a bit of a perfectionist. I wanted him to still have a little bit of “cuteness” even if he was a zombiebot, so I gave him a little scar-mouth smile.

This was a fun, quick project and Jared loves his new little minion. He will soon be living at Jared’s place of work to constantly remind him of what to do if a zombie apocalypse ever occurs. 😉

Review: Waterproof Bible

Review: Waterproof Bible

If you ever wanted a book that could withstand the challenges of camping, rainstorms, bathtubs, or even babies, the Waterproof Bible by Bardin & Marsee Publishing might be for you.

I received this rather cute pink KLV Waterproof Bible (NT, Ps & Pv version) and was surprised by how much I liked this product. The pink, of course, was definitely a plus for me, but if you are looking for something you want to send your guys out camping with, they come in blue and camo, too!

The history behind it was that the creators were active outdoor adventurers, involved in a lot of camping, kayaking, and trips in snowy mountains, but often wouldn’t take their scriptures with them because they didn’t want them to be ruined by the rough outdoor conditions. So, the “Outdoor” Bible was born. Soon they realized that there wasn’t just a demand for the outdoor conditions, but even indoor (think- reading a book in the tub, anyone?), and hence the name change to the Waterproof Bible!

Some features of The Waterproof Bible include:

  • Extremely durable synthetic pages and binding
  • Stain Resistant (I tested it with cola and OJ successfully)
  • Ultra clear text
  • Size fits well in totes or purses
  • Works well with dry highlighters or ballpoint pens (no gel pens 🙁 )
  • Synthetic pages help create no bleed through
  • Floats in water
  • Comes in ESV, KJV, NIV, NKJV, NLT versions of the Bible

Okay, testimonial time. I had a hard time “testing” the product. Jared stayed home from work the day of the conference call with Bardin of Bardin & Marsee because I was pretty sick and needed help to take care of Evie, so he heard the call and asked what I have done with my WB … I hadn’t done much since it’s counter-intuitive for me to destroy books of any kind, much less the Bible! So, to “help out” he promptly took it and threw it into the backyard (as it was conveniently a rainy day!) and told me to get it in a hour or so.

SAMSUNG SAMSUNG

This is after roughly 2 hours out in the backyard during a fairly heavy rainstorm.

SAMSUNG

After wiping out the pieces of grass that had been wedged into the pages and leaving it upright let the pages dry, the WB was in like-new perfect condition.

Evelyn also “helped out” by chewing on some of the pages, but I was happy to see that she didn’t manage to rip the pages or damage them (though, I am sure if she had really wanted to, she probably could have caused more damage… but she was happy to chew on the book. Happy day for all you with toddlers!)

Even though the product is a little pricey (Between $39.95-$44.95 for the full Bible, and $24.95 for the NT + Psalms and Proverbs versions), considering how incredibly durable this product is, I think it’s worth considering!

After reviewing this product, I have just one question:

When will all books start being made like this?

Review: Ooka Island Reading Game

Review: Ooka Island Reading Game

I recently had the opportunity to review this learning-to-read game, “Ooka Island Adventure” from Ooka Island Inc. This is a reading game aimed for ages 3-7 to help teach younger children how to read using a three-pronged approach:

Picture 5The reason that this is aimed at a younger age group is that the founders of Ooka realized that if you can teach children early enough on, most significant reading problems you come across later on can be avoided. (Something I noticed time and time again in my 7th grade classroom).

Pricing for this product is as follows:

Picture 6(The price is the same for homeschooling, too.)

While again, Evelyn is only 10 months old and isn’t quite ready for this product, I did do my best to test it and play with it.

The games are easy and fun to play with, and while some of them take a little time figure out initially, you get the hang of it quickly. The story line is fun and compelling, especially for the targeted age group. It’s easy to see how sounding out sounds in a game and creating words can teach kids to read before they even realize that they are learning!

The setting of the island and the different games and challenges are well done, both in teaching and playing. It’s also aesthetically pleasing.

Just-For-Fun-Activities

To put it simply (and to keep the review short!) I am definitely interested in getting this product in about 2 1/2-3 years for Evelyn.

Some other fun facts I learned while reviewing this product:

  • Ooka Island was a family affair: The creator was a teacher in a smaller community in Canada. In the 1960s, one of her sons had 5% of hearing and there wasn’t a lot of support set up in school for him. His mother started creating reading programs for him and found the connection between reading well and speaking well. She was super successful and soon had everyone in the community sending her their children with any sort of disabilities or just reading problems. Recently, they brought the technology aspect in with help from another son (who is a teacher), and he created the story line.
  • Ooka Island did quite well with a big study done by the US Public Education department when they studied several reading programs out there.
  • It was essential to the creator that she didn’t want to lose the “at the table 1×1” aspect with the technology that was so important in helping students in person.
  • Why Ooka? They started calling in “Booka” Island, but when the children testing it spoke about, most dropped the “B” and just called it “Ooka”, and the name stuck!
