A week without a disposal in the sink…

A week without a disposal in the sink…

While Jared was eating Lobster at Dean Kamen’s home in New Hampshire last Thursday, our kitchen’s garbage disposal gave up the ghost. It just no longer worked. It hummed softly when turned on, but never again viciously tore apart small food remnants into even smaller remnants to be washed away.

(And no, I didn’t stick anything into it to jam it, abuse it, or break it. It was just its time to pass on.)

So, the past week, we’ve been trying to make it work without the disposal. And let me tell you, I will never take them for granted again.

I won’t go into too much detail, as not to take the glory away from all the time Jared completely redoing the plumbing under the sink and replacing the old disposal with a “totally awesome monster one.” But I think tomorrow we’ll be able to use the sink again. And that makes me happy.

Also thinking happy thoughts is the fact that I got to meet with my CTWP friends in our post-institute meeting. Not everyone was there, but it was definitely a nice chance to see most of them again. But as it’s late, and Jared wants me to start sticking to a back-to-school sleeping schedule for my health, I will go into that more another time.

In summary: Long Live the Garbage Disposals!

Etsy Obsession

Etsy Obsession

So, shortly after my post regarding my silly art hobbies, I decided to make an account with Etsy.com.

(Warning: If you look at this website for more than 5 minutes, you will end up finding something you will spend money on. Don’t say I didn’t try to tell you.)

After perusing the art section for a short amount of time to see what kinds of things were there, I came across a few pieces of artwork that I really liked. Plus, I needed a cheap way of updating our bathrooms.

First, I found Black Baroque, who takes pages from antique books and does a print picture on top of them. The results are pretty awesome.

For the “Blue” guest bathroom:

For the downstairs powder room:

(All frames in this post were bought at Michaels, a store that is kind enough to give me and all teachers 15% off with their teacher ID badge. Score!)

The next store that really caught my eye was Teva Gallery. The colors and small details of her artwork just brightened my day. I couldn’t resist the appeal. It was only several days later that I realized that the artist is located in Israel and was shipping from there…But the end result? Totally worth the wait:

I have a vague idea of where these might end up… now I just need to convince my personal handyman to get them there. 🙂

So, what is the moral of the story? Does every story have to have a moral? Can’t I just share some awesome artwork I found? No? Okay, if you insist.

The moral of this story is: If you get an Etsy account, be prepared to spend money. And waste lots of time staring at lots of crazy or neat items you kind of want to buy but never actually would.

The Allegory of the AC Circuit Breaker

The Allegory of the AC Circuit Breaker

Two summers ago, when we first bought our house, the weather decided to make a run for making the record of the most days over 100 degrees. As you might imagine, it was hot. Jared and I were still euphoric about moving into our first home, so we didn’t let the heat stop us from starting to move our things from our apartment to the house.

That is, until the AC stopped working.

Even though we had the controls set to mid-seventies inside the house, the temperature rose into the eighties, and eventually, the nineties in the afternoon. And there is not much motivating about moving and cleaning up things in a house that is trying to cook you alive as you do so. As we investigated, we realized the problem wasn’t with the controls, but that the AC unit itself. It wouldn’t turn on.

Jared’s first thought was perhaps that it was a circuit breaker issue, but when we looked at the box in the garage, there was nothing labeled for the AC. So we did the next natural thing when you have a home warranty that is mandatory to get when you are buying your home: we called for an AC guy to come look at our unit.

A few days later, he showed up, and after about 15 minutes, decided that there’s nothing wrong with the unit and it must have been something with the circut breaker. Jared explained the dilemma about nothing being in the garage labeled for AC. The AC guy just stifled a laugh, shook his head with amusement, and walked us around the house, to point us to the circut controls that are on the OUTSIDE of the house.

Until that moment, we did NOT know that box even existed. He opened it, pointed to the somewhat clearly labeled AC part, flipped the switch, and immediately the AC unit turned on. We paid the guy, and thought it was over.

Until a few days later, when the AC stopped working again. We flipped it again. Then the next day. And the next day. And the next day. Then it increasingly got worse and worse, to the point where it would only last a few minutes, if we were lucky. So like the smart people we were, we called the electrician, who when he came, opened up the box, and showed us the circut breaker (or what was left, at least):

AC Circut Breaker 1     AC Circut Breaker 2

The electrician held up this charred piece of plastic and metal next to a new, bigger and better breaker. He then patiently explained to me that the circuit breaker was technically the required # load for the job, but a solid, good breaker that would be capable of standing up to the load that was needed (especially in one of the hottest summers ever) would be nearly twice as thick as this one. This poor guy just couldn’t take the load it was labeled for. He then put in the bigger breaker, same # caliber as the other one but twice the size.

Our AC has been amazing ever since.

I bring this up though, because lately, I feel like I’m the fried circuit breaker. Despite the many things I’ve done to “flip the switch” to get things back on track, it’s not enough. Even the positive experiences I do have only last a short while before it runs out.My metaphorical batteries are run dry (apparently, I didn’t get Energizer brand) and every task I do takes so much more energy than I could have ever predicted. Getting up out of bed in the morning is a chore.

And teaching… All my previous years, I was excited to go back. Even after my month in June, and YWC, and a few weeks rest, I am unsure if I am doing the right thing. If I’m even GOOD enough to do it. I’m plagued with all kinds of doubts. Example: If I was GOOD enough to be a teacher, wouldn’t I be able to teach a grade level I want? If I was GOOD enough, wouldn’t have somebody at a high school taken me on by now?

Generally we want to be the hero (or heroines) of our tale. Somebody brilliant, brave, talented, who can stand up to any challenge thrown at us. The Harry Potter, Bella Swan, Ender Wiggin, Aragorn,  Kendra or Seth Sorenson of our own life.

But right now, all I am is a broken circuit breaker, trying to make it one day at a time.

Spring Break…

Spring Break…

…couldn’t have come at a better time. I am feeling incredibly burned out. I know I took on too much this year, and with my various roles-teacher, StuCo, mentor, AVID, etc- it’s really hurting me. On top of it all is the stress about the public education system and budget cuts throughout Texas. Rumors are flying, and each one just goes from bad to worse. So I know if I am still in the same place next year, I will need to be cutting back significantly for my own sanity. Even if my kids are as great as most of them are this year. 🙂

Saturday and Monday I did a lot of yardwork. We have two enormous live oak trees that apparently like to shed their leaves in the spring, not fall. Awesome. Allergies are going to start soon because now the new buds are coming out and with them, a fine dusting of pollen. Everywhere.

I had the opportunity to learn how to start a quilt this week. One of my co-workers has tried to get me to sew with her for over a year now. So, Tuesday, I finally took her up on her offer and spent the day starting a quilt. To all you out there who have done this several times… wow. I bow down to you. The process can be intimidating! Picking fabrics, cutting them so precisely, sewing them together just as precisely… it’s scary. But I’m excited. I think the overall quilt will look great.

Quilt Overall

This is how it will look basically overall… Essentially 8×10 squares

Quilt pt 1       Quilt Pt 2        Quilt pt 3

And here are some of the smaller parts- close-ups.

My “Theme” fabric that I used to tie in the remaining colors with was the one with the white-ish background and colorful circle/abstract flowers on it. All the colors are supposed to tie it with that.

Overall, I have really been enjoying the process.  At this point, I’ve managed to sew all the smaller squares into the foursomes, and the first 5 rows have been sewed into their strips. Eeek! I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how much I’ve liked it and how well it’s been going!!!

Yesterday was probably the worst day of the break. Stevie had his first dental. Italian Greyhounds tend to have peridental disease due to the shape of their mouth, and to help with it, we’ve taken to brushing the pup’s teeth around 1x a week. However, we’re not always as good as we should be, so Stevie’s mouth wasn’t looking that great. I knew that we needed to get his teeth cleaned, but it was a disaster.

We were told to bring him in at 7:00-7:30am, and he should be good to go by 4:00. So I brought him in at the appointed time, but then the vets didn’t get to him until 2:00 or 3:00 pm! What is the point of that? Really? Anyway, so I was on edge all day and didn’t even get an update call until they put him under and started the work around 3:30pm. I was furious. They ended up pulling three of his cute little teeth in the front. 🙁

I called them at 5:30 PM, because they still hadn’t called me to let me know if he was ready for pickup. They closed at 6:00, so they said I probably should come in. So I come in, get instructions on care for him and medications, etc, and I pay the expensive bill. Finally, I see my poor, pathetic Stevie, groggy still from the medication and smelling of the anesthetic. I start to carry him out the door to the car, and he starts to bleed profusely all over my hand. Apparently they hadn’t thought to bandage the arm that they stuck the IV in, and so once he started moving a little, he was bleeding. I had to take him back in and ask for them to help clean him up and take care of his poor arm.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, anybody?

I didn’t sleep very well last night; any time Stevie moved, I woke up to make sure he was okay. He’s still not himself today, but at least he’s eating and looking a little better.

Now that my week is almost over, I just wish it could have gone on a little longer. There is always so much I want to do, ad never enough time to get done with everything! I haven’t even looked at anything work related. (Should I really admit that?) I just couldn’t bear the thought. I guess I should do some of it over the weekend before school starts again!

Farewell, Spring Break. Our parting comes all too soon.

Texas Snow Day, Y’all!

Texas Snow Day, Y’all!

Okay, so all my friends and relatives will totally laugh when you see what a “Snow Day” in Central Texas consists off.

Snow Day 2011

But this rarely happens. The temp. have been aroud 20 degrees F for the last 24 hours as well, and underneath the inch or so of snow on the roads is a fine layer of black ice. Central Texas isn’t really equipped to handle this sort of weather, so most of the smart businesses shut down. Not Jared’s, of course. But my school district did! So happy snow day to me!

And since Stevie and Bonnie aren’t the kind of dogs that are equipped for this sort of weather, I get them ready for the outside weather too!

Bonnie’s Snow Day

Stevie’s Snow Day

Stevie: “Ugh, what IS this torturous white stuff?!”

Not to mention that now the patio is covered with about an inch of snow, so he can’t even step outside without getting in the snow!

While I’m sad I will have to make this day up later, I will just have to make a diligent effort to enjoy my THREE DAY WEEKEND… and the fact that I got to sleep in, I am definitely staying in my PJs aaaaallllllllllllllllll day today, and I have a lot of good books to curl up with. Difficult, I know.

Happy Snow Day, y’all!
