End of another visit

End of another visit

So, the past several days, we had my parents visit us here. Why anybody would want to visit Texas in the middle of summer, especially a Texas experiencing its third worst drought on record, is beyond me. We must just be worth it. Or perhaps it was just the lure of some cute grandpuppies.

Sleepy Stevie

Dorky Bonz

Yes, Bonnie can and does sleep like that for long periods of time. But I digress.

Anyways, there was a lot of chillin’ around the house, but we did go out and do things, too.

The Parents arrived quite early Saturday morning (2:30 AM, to be precise). That meant we spent a lot of time recuperating. from a late night (and I cleaned most of the entire day Friday because I’m overly paranoid about people showing up and my house not looking nice, so I was tired too) and Saturday was a chill day.

Other things that occurred with the Parents here:

1. Went to church

2. Went to the spa

3. Went to the outlet mall

4. Went to the normal mall

5. Visited Jared’s work’s annual convention downtown and admired all the cool machinery and software wizardry that his work affects

6. Was given a balloon, card, and a cake as a pre-birthday present

7. Ate at some of the good restaurants around here that didn’t follow my diet

Honestly, it was just too hot to do much during the day here to do a lot of meaningful activities. Even with the air conditioning on full blast, traveling in the car is still miserably hot in 105+ degree temps. That plus the fact that the back to school deadline is looming over me, I was rather moody, cranky, and unpleasant to be around. Fortunately, I think the dogs’ cuteness made up for all of that, too.

Despite all of that, it was a good visit. Times like that make me sad that we live so far from all our family and old friends, even though we have new friends here.

Good thing I have these goofs to keep me company during those lonely moments!

So, I could go forward with my rant about how overused the word “epic” is. Or talk about how the South Beach diet is (not) going for me (First 5 lbs in like the first week, gone. Then in the following 3 weeks of faithfulness, only 5 more lbs. UGH.) But both of those aren’t very positive, and I need a non-negative post right now. Or at least something in that “neutral” zone.

So, a little history into the crafty side of Elisabeth. I like doing crafty stuff, but generally it’s non-typical crafty stuff. I’ve tried quilting, scrapbooking, and even photograph albums, but I’m just not the best with them. Story of my life.

During my senior year of high school, my totally awesome mythology teacher (yes, I got to take a whole year of MYTHOLOGY in high school. BEST. CLASS. EVER. And not because it was an “Easy A” sort of class, because it wasn’t.) had us do a mosaic project. We could take any subject in Greek/Roman mythology and make a mosaic of it, using whatever materials you’d like. So I took a picture of John W. Waterhouse that he made from The Odyssey.

Penelope and the Suitors

(You can find “Penelope and the Suitors” and more from the John W. Waterhouse website.)

My teacher had an overhead of this picture, so I was able to project it up on the wall and do a rough sketch of what would fit on my posterboard I had been given to work with. Fifty hours -yes, really FIFTY 5-0 hours- later, after using up lots of beads, thread, yarn, glitter, and paper, I turned this in:

Most people really liked it. It was voted in the top 3 of however many students finished the assignment. That was pretty cool. My mom was really proud of it, and as a birthday present the next year, she got it framed all nice for me. It now sits on the wall in our dining room, even though every time I look at it I find ways I could have made it better.

Anyways, around the same time we moved into our house, I got the desire to make another mosaic, this time taking my inspiration from Greg Olsen’s art, White as Snow. It almost turned into a gift for somebody else, but after spending 10 hours just to finish Christ:

I knew that I would be too invested to give it away. Plus, shipping the thing would’ve been a pain. So instead, I gave her this, which was probably much more conveniently sized as well!) This time, the project took about 30 hours, mainly using various beads and stones and some twine. Not having to cut up colored paper into tiny sizes really cut back on the time. It sat around the house for awhile, until this past Valentine’s Day when Jared took it and me to the nearest Michaels store to get it framed. (And let me tell you, that isn’t cheap!) It now resides in our living room wall, looking like this:

Lately, I’ve been doing “glitter pictures,” something that I saw Martha Stewart (and no, trust me, I am no “Martha Stewart” housewife in ANY way or form) do on a Jay Leno show. Very random. But it’s fun. You take a picture, and then you glitterfy (new word!) it.

Sunflower pre-glitter  turns into

I take the picture, size it and print it out, then glue it to a canvas. After it dries, I glitterfy it. Since I haven’t had time the past year to do this sort of thing, it took me a bit of time to warm up to it, about 5 hours. But the finished result is pretty neat, yes? I’m working on one of Bonnie to see if I can “customize” it more.

Glitter Bonnie

Stinky Stevie has not been glitterfied yet. It’s probably a good thing he can’t read this blog, or he’d be offended I did Bonnie first. But he is a MAN dog, after all, and I’m pretty sure Jared would say being glitterfied is not manly.

Anyways, Jared thinks I should try doing this on one of those crafty websites and see if anybody would want to buy it, but I don’t know. What do YOU think?

(Sorry for any fuzzy pictures… our camera is on its last legs and has been having lots of issues…)

Spring Break…

Spring Break…

…couldn’t have come at a better time. I am feeling incredibly burned out. I know I took on too much this year, and with my various roles-teacher, StuCo, mentor, AVID, etc- it’s really hurting me. On top of it all is the stress about the public education system and budget cuts throughout Texas. Rumors are flying, and each one just goes from bad to worse. So I know if I am still in the same place next year, I will need to be cutting back significantly for my own sanity. Even if my kids are as great as most of them are this year. 🙂

Saturday and Monday I did a lot of yardwork. We have two enormous live oak trees that apparently like to shed their leaves in the spring, not fall. Awesome. Allergies are going to start soon because now the new buds are coming out and with them, a fine dusting of pollen. Everywhere.

I had the opportunity to learn how to start a quilt this week. One of my co-workers has tried to get me to sew with her for over a year now. So, Tuesday, I finally took her up on her offer and spent the day starting a quilt. To all you out there who have done this several times… wow. I bow down to you. The process can be intimidating! Picking fabrics, cutting them so precisely, sewing them together just as precisely… it’s scary. But I’m excited. I think the overall quilt will look great.

Quilt Overall

This is how it will look basically overall… Essentially 8×10 squares

Quilt pt 1       Quilt Pt 2        Quilt pt 3

And here are some of the smaller parts- close-ups.

My “Theme” fabric that I used to tie in the remaining colors with was the one with the white-ish background and colorful circle/abstract flowers on it. All the colors are supposed to tie it with that.

Overall, I have really been enjoying the process.  At this point, I’ve managed to sew all the smaller squares into the foursomes, and the first 5 rows have been sewed into their strips. Eeek! I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how much I’ve liked it and how well it’s been going!!!

Yesterday was probably the worst day of the break. Stevie had his first dental. Italian Greyhounds tend to have peridental disease due to the shape of their mouth, and to help with it, we’ve taken to brushing the pup’s teeth around 1x a week. However, we’re not always as good as we should be, so Stevie’s mouth wasn’t looking that great. I knew that we needed to get his teeth cleaned, but it was a disaster.

We were told to bring him in at 7:00-7:30am, and he should be good to go by 4:00. So I brought him in at the appointed time, but then the vets didn’t get to him until 2:00 or 3:00 pm! What is the point of that? Really? Anyway, so I was on edge all day and didn’t even get an update call until they put him under and started the work around 3:30pm. I was furious. They ended up pulling three of his cute little teeth in the front. 🙁

I called them at 5:30 PM, because they still hadn’t called me to let me know if he was ready for pickup. They closed at 6:00, so they said I probably should come in. So I come in, get instructions on care for him and medications, etc, and I pay the expensive bill. Finally, I see my poor, pathetic Stevie, groggy still from the medication and smelling of the anesthetic. I start to carry him out the door to the car, and he starts to bleed profusely all over my hand. Apparently they hadn’t thought to bandage the arm that they stuck the IV in, and so once he started moving a little, he was bleeding. I had to take him back in and ask for them to help clean him up and take care of his poor arm.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, anybody?

I didn’t sleep very well last night; any time Stevie moved, I woke up to make sure he was okay. He’s still not himself today, but at least he’s eating and looking a little better.

Now that my week is almost over, I just wish it could have gone on a little longer. There is always so much I want to do, ad never enough time to get done with everything! I haven’t even looked at anything work related. (Should I really admit that?) I just couldn’t bear the thought. I guess I should do some of it over the weekend before school starts again!

Farewell, Spring Break. Our parting comes all too soon.

Texas Snow Day, Y’all!

Texas Snow Day, Y’all!

Okay, so all my friends and relatives will totally laugh when you see what a “Snow Day” in Central Texas consists off.

Snow Day 2011

But this rarely happens. The temp. have been aroud 20 degrees F for the last 24 hours as well, and underneath the inch or so of snow on the roads is a fine layer of black ice. Central Texas isn’t really equipped to handle this sort of weather, so most of the smart businesses shut down. Not Jared’s, of course. But my school district did! So happy snow day to me!

And since Stevie and Bonnie aren’t the kind of dogs that are equipped for this sort of weather, I get them ready for the outside weather too!

Bonnie’s Snow Day

Bonnie getting ready to go play outside…

Stevie’s Snow Day

Stevie: “Ugh, what IS this torturous white stuff?!”

Not to mention that now the patio is covered with about an inch of snow, so he can’t even step outside without getting in the snow!

While I’m sad I will have to make this day up later, I will just have to make a diligent effort to enjoy my THREE DAY WEEKEND… and the fact that I got to sleep in, I am definitely staying in my PJs aaaaallllllllllllllllll day today, and I have a lot of good books to curl up with. Difficult, I know.

Happy Snow Day, y’all!

Christmas Preparations

Christmas Preparations

Truly, this is the most wonderful time of the year. (Except summer, of course. But two weeks off from school is pretty awesome, too.)

My house actually looks relatively clean. First time in awhile I’ve had time to rest AND do stuff.

Amazing!

Today I battled the yard for a little bit. I trimmed vines and branches of hibernating plants, creating a pile taller than me. Despite the enormous pile, I’m not even half done. Then, as I was working, Bonnie attempted a jailbreak. While chasing Bonnie during aforementioned jailbreak, I stepped on a dead branch that went through the bottom of my shoe into my foot. Ouch. Hence the “half done” part of the yard.

Yard= 1. Me = 0.

Well played, yard, well played…

Along with adventuring the yardwork, I also made some of my favorite Christmastime treats. Particularly today, I managed to make a traditional French treat: Buche de Noel. Pretty awesome.

Buche 1

Buche 2

Might make a few small adjustments, but after a couple of hours, I’m feeling pretty good about this. Sponge cake, Meringue Mushrooms, homemade frostings. 🙂

Good way to end a slightly crazy day. Can’t wait for Christmas!!!!
